A Manchester based film-maker, Colin works for the BBC by Day. The rest of the time he hires himself out as a Film-Maker, in the roles of Camera Op, Editor, Writer, Director, or all of the above. Any remaining time is spent on his own projects and a healthy fascination with Photography, Tea and Transforming Robots.

Some of the films he has Directed include the independent feature film MANCATTAN and the infamous short BOG STANDARD, which premiered in a toilet... He has also directed short WATERLOO ROAD films for BBC OUTREACH and most recently was Director Of Photography on THE WATCHER

Years of Professional Broadcast experience means Colin has the highest professional work ethic and reputation. His love and use of the Canon 5D Mark II also means he achieves images of astounding quality. He is also heavily involved in the independent film scene in the North West of England.

Colin Warhurst (Writer/Director) and Chris Lane (Producer) talk here about the making of their first ever joint project, the critically acclaimed short film BOG STANDARD

This film was shot over two days and is set, entirely, in a loo. If that wasn't enough, we also premiered the film... in a loo. All of that stuff and more can be found at our website; http://www.BOGSTANDARDfilm.com

But here is our documentary about the making of the film itself. We see where the idea for the film came from, what happened on location, and what everyone gained from the project.

Colin and Chris go to great lengths here to discuss how to treat your cast and crew when working on a no-budget film. They discuss having a plan for your film from start through to delivery, and the importance of good relationships and honesty throughout the process.

We also get to see what exactly went on inside The Soapworks factory in Salford during the making of this flim, with rooftop adventures, criminal farting and even car crashes.

And you thought this was just a short film about a having a poo? Think again. We hope you enjoy our insight into the making of Bog Standard, and that it inspires you to go out and make movies.

...lurking around on Ikea's roof taking landscape photos, filming inside one of Ikea's living rooms as a cheap set for a micro-short film, attempting some late night photography on Werneth Lowe but freezing our butts off and hiding in a pub instead, taking some head shots for the never ending Bog Standard multimedia package, shooting a music video in an old BBC radio studio with Jay Sharp, Chris and I recording David Brent's 'Free Love On The Free Love Free Way', shooting a film noir starring Hazel Earle and Stan The Actor in Au Gnome Du L'Amour, The Torrs, being camera operator for BBC's School Report which was also the first ever live broadcast to come out of the BBC's new home in Media City in Salford, the final sign-off for Stuck In A Box Studios and the move into Colin Warhurst Films, shooting a music video around rainy and sunny Castlefield for Carly Dee, timelapses over Salford, test shooting in cars at night, marvelling at Chris Lane's acting skills, shooting at The Castle Hotel in Manchester to film John King and his band doing their thing as well as an awesome cover of Jimi Hendrix, fire pit and pipes with Mike Justice and Co at Chateau Grayskull, scary Pre-Production experiences for The Watcher in terms of deadline and Chris Lane making friends with ghosts, the Filmonik Kabaret which saw me shoot a bittersweet drama Inconvenience, a musical in Chinatown, and a full on brutal fight scene with a story twist that I provided called The Entertainer, dangerous drinking games for Steech's birthday all captured on the 5D, shooting the epic and enthralling Paradise Heights 30 minute drama The Watcher, which involved Chris crashing his car into cones, Joe O'Byrne getting lost on his way to location, shooting with fire, working with a huge cast and and crew, shooting in gale force winds, avoiding police, wrestling with Joe O'Byrne's inability to turn left, Marek, one eyed teddy bears, dodging fourteen-wheeler trucks at 3am, sending out the second unit for GV's and Chips, and hanging around on balconies in Salford, shooting My Little Ponies with Chris Lane and dodging exploding blenders, Hazel Tree Productions lead into battle by Hazel Earle with a second Shakespearian Tapas production called Will's Midsummer Madness, tilt-shift, Hackintosh, getting The Watcher edited for the June deadline, premiering The Watcher at The Lowry, a much needed holiday down in Devon to recharge the batteries and writing a lot of the background stories and plot arcs for Cities Of Reign, shooting Will Power in the biggest mansion and poshest house I have ever seen, saying farewell to the BBC offices on Oxford Road that have been my home for the past six years and moving to Media City, buying a display cabinet big enough for all of my Transformers only to find that it isn't big enough after all, shooting a musical and being part of a 100 strong cast & crew, arguing the case for Human's needing noses, unveiling The Watcher online for Halloween, shooting a little introduction film for the North West New Wave, running our first ever North West New Wave film night (a huge success by the way), defending our reputations after a slanderous attack and lies coming from a certain 'Transmedia' MD who is still to apologise for lying about us in public and offer a retraction statement, turning 29 years young at Big Hands, spending my 29th birthday money on camera gear and not Transformers thus making me a proper grown up and slightly melancholy, High Flying Birds, the debut of The Montoyas, shooting a trailer for Hazel Tree Productions Xmas comedy show Grotto whilst being pelted with rocks by chavs, watching and thoroughly enjoying the barnstorming success that was Grotto, the Death Of Optimus Prime (again), playing with as many Canon L-Series lenses as you could dream of and getting to grips with the production model of the Canon C-300 EOS Cinema camera, Rohypnojitos at Len and Hazel II's, getting to grips with performing in front of a Green Screen for the sequel to last year's Xmas video and providing some Xmas cheer and a little bit of a drag act from Ben Mottershead for 2011, oh and having a draft of Cities Of Reign Episode One almost finished before midnight; hey, it was a busy year and so you'll forgive me if you have to wait just a while longer.

Cast, Crew, Amigos, Friends and some Masked 'Yoofs' on The Watcher set. I'm sure Joe O'Byrne, Ian Curely, Ben Mottershead, Paul Anderton, Chris Lane and Dan Warhurst will all join me in saying thank you for watching and supporting us in 2011, the year of the 'Never-ending-shitstorm-bloody-hell-could-anything-else-possibly-go-wrong-but-we-came-through-in-the-end.' x

Stuck In A Box Studios - The End of an Era...

it really was. Stuck In a Box Studios, the company/brand I set up for myself when I left college, has lasted seven years.

The name, and modus operandi, literally came out of having nothing to start my film-making career and aspirations with other than my parent's box room. It became about doing something, anything, with whatever you had however you could.

That attitude has stood the test of time, it has took me all over the world, it has seen me with a Feature Film credit to my name, it has seen me meet hundred's of talented people across many genres, and ultimately lead to my job at the BBC.

The Legacy and message of Siab Studios, is one I have and always will recommend to anyone in any walk of life. I made a studio whilst stuck in my box. I did pretty good.

So why the retirement?

Well, because Stuck In A Box was always meant to get me somewhere. It was only recently that I realised that I am somewhere. I am exactly where I want to be professionally, creatively and personally. I'd been powering on for so long with my head down to get to that place, I didn't realise I had already been there for quite a while.

Going forward, it made sense to recognise that I don't need to use a brand, that emphasises making something out of what you have (usually not much) now that I am where I want to be. The plan was to launch a new "brand" this year (Warhorse Media) emphasising that actually I am now a professional Film-maker, and have been for several years. But again, this was missing the point.

Then a friend told me, stop creating more logos and brands for yourself;

"Be your own Brand. People want to work with you not your company name."

It was so obvious, but I hadn't seen it that way. Being terribly British and sensitive to that sort of thing, I was worried that coming out as "just Colin Warhurst" maybe seen as terribly arrogant. But it isn't, and I was only holding myself back by being so, well, prudish? Don't get me wrong, I'd rather play safe than be arrogant, and occasionally I have teetered over that dark abyss and believed my own hype. However, those lessons have been learned, and they don't ruin all the good work I have done over the years. It was time to "come out" of the Camera Closet.

The Stuck In A Box Studios ethic is one I am proud of and will always, always, recommend to people starting out in what it is they want to do. It exists in all shapes and sizes across the globe, I'm by no means the first to encapsulate the idea of Just Do It, Do Well Nothing, Every Journey Starts With The First Step and so on... I hope someone reading this now, who is where I was seven years ago, may recognise that same idea within them. It can and it does work; just.... start!

For me now though? I work for the most recognisable Broadcasting company in the world by day, and by night I have consistently been making films for over 7 years. I have made a Feature film, entirely independently, I even managed to get a few thousand people to watch it. I can count among my friends some of the most talented film-makers, writers, directors, actors, and all round creative people that I've ever known. I wake up of a day, and I know I can make good work with good people and enjoy my life.

I think it is fair enough to say that I am no longer Stuck In A Box. I am Colin Warhurst...

Wow; this is immense. After only having had my 5D for less than a fortnight, Mike Pettyt invited me to be camera operator on this amazing shoot for Jeanie In The Radiator, as previously reported here. Not only was it shot using my 5D MkII, but it was a multi camera shoot, where we also had a Canon 7D and a Canon 550D. I am so unbelievably chuffed to see the results; this is the best thing I have ever shot photographically wise, and has really shown the strength that lies within the video capabilities of these cameras.
We had all individually come across individual camera shoots, but as far as we knew, this was the first multi-camera HD-DSLR shoot many of us had been involved with. I think the results speak for themselves.
Kudos to the entire team for pulling together to make something which looks and sounds this great. The lighting from Alex as D.O.P. is fantastic and Mike himself did an awesome job of Directing and Editing.
This is only one of four music videos we shot on the day. Please watch and enjoy; hopefully you will find it as gorgeous as I have, and am equally excited as to what else I can get out of my new camera.

Bog Standard star is TV's new Lambrini... Guy?

My First 5D Mark II Film - Motorway

So I had my 5D for a day or two and decided I should do some testing. But rather than just having a load of test clips and photos, I thought I should try and assemble a little film. Hopefully you'll like this and the interesting bokeh effects I was able to get on the spur of the moment.

Not sure what went on here with the compression, I am still working out the 5D / FCP workflow. I will try a re-encode later using Pro-Res versions of the master clips; this was all straight into FCP as h264 and right back out again.

Michael has been so much more than just our lead actor. He was there at every pre-production meeting as soon as he was cast, dug in on set lugging gear around and making sure everyone's spirits were kept high, and has continued to push (no pun intended) and promote the film at every event we have held. Not content with having his bottom hanging out for two days of filming, his dedication at the toilet screening saw him stay in character to surprise our unsuspecting audience in each of our 13 screenings. He has been an absolute legend to work with, he is a very committed and giving person as well as an actor, and to be honest you are a fool if you do not consider him for your next film-making project. I have already cast him in my next one... He just doesn't know it yet!

Chris Lane; where do I start? After Mancattan and trying to make Karma virtually solo, it was obvious I needed Help. Medically and Psychologically perhaps, but also in terms of a Producer. Chris and I met at one of Vision and Media's networking events, and we got chatting by virtue of seeming to be the only normal people in the room. He insisted that he loved Paperwork and Producing, and so not missing a trick, I told him I had an idea in the works about a man in a loo. "Don't worry," I said, "It'll be easy and done in under a month..."

Chris has worked literally non-stop on this film and the only reason you know about it and see it where it is now is down to his efforts. Again, if you are making a film and need a Producer, he is the hardest working man I know (and he doesn't even have a job at the moment!) - I couldn't have done it without him and so Chris; I LOVE YOU. No just kidding, I REALLY LOVE YOU. Sorry for being so cantankerous along the way and for locking myself away in various edits leaving you to do the hard work. I know you want me to do that Feature Film thing next year, and we will. Probably. Maybe. I think for now though, we have both earned a wee break.

So, many thanks once again, this has honestly been the longest s*** I have ever had in my life.

My New Canon 5D Mark II - Back To School

So it finally arrived. A HD-DSLR all of my very own. Don't worry, I intend to take some serious photography on this beast, not just use it for video recording. I don't mind fessing up that this thing has crippled me financially, hence having no decent lenses to start with. Those will follow shortly, and so for now I am going down the adaptor/second hand route and have already had some interesting results.

Working for the BBC for four years handling cameras daily means I have picked up that subconscious knack of just grabbing the camera(s) I'm used to and not really thinking about getting them up and running. By now, the usual routines are all second nature, like anyone's job. I can pretty much pick up any camera and get going fairly quickly. Every camera has it's specifics, but they also share common traits and functionality. But not with HD-DSLRs; having had a play this evening, I can honestly say I am excited, scared and intimated by just how different filming on the 5D is going to be.

Don't worry, this isn't new news to me, I had done my research incredibly thoroughly. Buying a camera like this cannot be a rash decision. But even with all the research, it still feels refreshing, scary and odd to instinctively reach for a certain control or think about setting your shot up in one way, and then having to stop the autopilot part of your brain from kicking in and to double check everything. Methodical thinking is the order of the day.

However, if you really need me to sum up my first impressions of shifting from a true video camera to a HD-DSLR, I would describe it as thus;

It is like going from Driving a Car, to a Tank.
With no co-pilot.
In the dark. On ice.
And it's raining. On the edge of a ravine.

The results will be/are remarkable, but by The Force, you absolutely have to know to know what you are doing. Currently, this is all new to me, and so I don't have a clue. I am a rookie with my own camera; and I find this (oddly? perversely?) massively exciting.

I can't wait to re-discover whatever the hell it was that got me interested in cameras/editing/film-making/directing in the first place. Recent experiences with Mancattan/British Film/BBFC/UKFC bollocks has left me rather despondent and at times wanting to jack it all in.

However, looking through a lens on a camera like this and taking a picture/shot/clip does something in reality that the manuals, tech checks, blogs, comparisons, info sheets, tests and critiques can never do.

It allows you to capture a little pieces of magic. That is priceless.

The Bog Standard Toilet Screening

Top blog writer Jane McConnell asked me if I wouldn't mind giving a few words regarding the state of British Film, from an independent slant, now that the relative dust has settled since the closure of the UK Film Council was announced.

I was mightily humbled to be asked, and just hoped I would have something of interest to say, and to not come across as a "bitter film maker from the North." I needn't have worried as Jane has put together a fantastic piece, properly researched (fancy that in this day and age. Did I mention I never read the papers any more? Ever?) and featuring contributions from numerous sources.

If you have come across this UK Film Debate or conversation before, but felt like you didn't want to wade into the middle of a war, then PLEASE START WITH JANE'S ARTICLE. You owe it yourself if you are a fan of film, not just a film-maker. It's a top read and doesn't feature me (or anyone else) ranting. I believe in internet parlance, that is called "Win."

BBC Waterloo Road Event

Wow! Last night was the roller coaster ending to an exhausting 9 day epic film quest, and my first officially recognised Drama project for the BBC.

I applied for a two week attachment with BBC Outreach, the department responsible for working with communities and young people. Together, Outreach, BBC Project North and the creators of Waterloo Road, Shed Productions, set up a scheme involving four schools across the north.

A small production team of only four people, plus a different script editor from Shed for each school, had just one school day to meet, workshop and shoot an entire film, whose story was written by and starred the pupils themselves, in just one school day.

Me, and George Sampson (Britain's Got Talent and now Waterloo Road).

Brilliantly, it was all my experience working on low budget, short schedule and guerilla films that made sure I was up to the task. The pace was intense, and after four long days shooting and travelling, I then had just 4 days to edit all the films.

Yesterday was the culmination of all that graft. The heads of BBC Drama and BBC North, the senior Shed Management, most of the cast and crew of Waterloo Road itself and 100+ school pupils sat in judgement of our hard work.

I was massively nervous; the screening would be the first time anyone outside the production team would have seen the films. Thankfully, the hard work on set and in the edit paid off.

The BBC and Shed folks were all massively impressed with the standard of the films. Everybody was expecting some shaky "community films" but instead were greeted with "dark edgy plots" (Shed) "superb acting" (Actor Mark Benton) and some "amazing camera work (Actor Robson Greene).

The pupils themselves were, thankfully, ecstatic with the final films, and a few pupils actually asked me and Lindsey (our AMAZING coordinator and now invaluable 1st AD... Hopefully she'll be working on the next SiabS project...) for our autographs and a few pictures!

I think one of them is an Actor, the other a talented Director...

All in all, a fantastic night. The Shed team seemed to like the films and the fact we had managed to imitate the style of Waterloo Road with the kit/time we had, rather than trying to make a straight copy of it.

So now, a day of rest and a few thank you emails. And then back to work on those "silly do-it-in-my-own-time" films that I make...

But I don't mind admitting that 100 professionals and 100 kids applauding your hard work feels pretty good, and massively inspiring. Result.

I am currently on the road with the BBC Outreach team on an epic and intense adventure across the North West. We have four days to shoot four films that have been written by and star pupils from four schools across the Northwest. We're attempting to re-create the style of Waterloo Road, and to that end Shed (the makers of WR) have leant us their actual script editors for each shoot.

Once these epic, jam packed and incredibly tiring (but highly worthwhile) shooting days are done, I have just three days to edit them.

Four films. Three days.

I applied for this gig a while ago, wanting both the opportunity to work with kids, make films, and to get a BBC Directing credit, finally putting my "non day job" interests and expertise into use for Auntie.

I just have to make sure I deliver the goods! Especially seeing as on Tuesday there is a huge premiere with the cast of Waterloo Road, head of BBC North, head of BBC Drama, the Mayor of Manchester, all the starring school-children and MORE all in attendance.

The pressure is on. Ultimately my experiences on my "hobby" making films, with no/low budgets, at short notice, on tiny timescales and against the odds, is the only thing that is making sure I, representing the BBC, stand a chance of pulling this off. Now I have this chace to prove my worth to the Beeb, I can't blow it.

With that being said, it still pales in comparison to the expectation from all the kids who've written and starred in these films. I can't let them down, and want to deliver high quality, dramatic films that they deserve.

Day two, I'm knackered, exhausted and hungry. But you know what? I love it. Roll on day three.

Hi folks. Not sure how I feel about this youtube clip. It features two professional actors falling out on set, with one being rather vocal, much in the same manner as Christian Bale's famous "Terminator Salvation" rant that was leaked last year. What makes it worse, is that this happened with the star of our previous film (Michael Justice of Bog Standard) and a new actor we've been working with called Stan.

My faithful PC has lasted 10 years, but unfortunately time, technology, HD, storage and more means that I have to finally put it out to the farm, and bring in a successor to step into it's mighty boots and hearty reputation. My PC has literally got me where I am today, personally and professionally, I have depended on it for so long and I acknowledge with a tinge of sadness and the utmost respect where it has gotten me, and inspired the ethos of Stuck In A Box Studios; do what you can with what you have.

So today sees the new "Studio" of Stuck In A Box Studios arrive, an i7 iMac... It has some big shoes to fill, and a huge bill to justify! Onwards and upwards!

Music Video: The Words - "Fag" - Directed by Leo Worne

Leo Worne has completed the first non-Colin-Warhurst directed SiabS film (a dubious honour!) with his superb video for our amigos The Words. We were offered the filming gig last Nov, but I had loads on, and so offered it out to Leo, who is a remarkably talented young chap who is going far in telly-film world. It was a pleasure and huge relief knowing I could hand directing responsibilities over someone not only capable of the job, but who could run with the challenge and create something of their own. Hopefully this is just the start of many more SiabS films directed by numerous people, as was the original vision way back in 2003.

The song is called "FAG" and is written by Manchester-based band The Words. THe single is out to download, buy and generally get a hold of as of Jan 11th, so head to their website for all the info. This video will exist all over the web and be hosted in all sorts of places, but I have linked to Leo's page directly for now. On the band's website, we had well over 250 hits within twelve hours of it goinglive, not bad work at all!

And so the "noughties" passes us by and one should be driven to write something deep, meaningful and poetic about the past decade. I leave that task to better people, and instead muse on where personally the 21st Century has taken me thus far. I have loved and I have lost, I have been inspired and I have seen despair, I have achieved the highest of highs and ultimate victories, and I have been beset by challenges on all sides. And so has everybody else, I think it is called Life.

However, faced with the conundrums and paradoxes of modern day existence, it isn't the obstacles we face but how we face them that truly matters. All in all, I'd say that ten years is a long time , and the past ten years have seen me ultimately be the Man I wanted to be way back in the year 2000. I have a home, a wonderful partner who makes me better every day, an awesome family, a brilliant day job and most importantly the freedom, ability, desire and (luckily) still unlimited enthusiasm for "messing about with cameras and films."

Let's see where the next ten years take us and I hope that anyone reading this acknowledges that although life is short, it is jam packed full of potential. Don't be a spectator, get involved, take part. Ultimate satisfaction, creativity and general force of good (politics basically) doesn't just happen by sitting on the sidelines. So DO whatever it is you want to do. In the past ten year's I have become a film-maker, a home-owner, travelled the world, made a feature film, started on my dream career path, graduated University, jumped out of a plane, went bungee jumping, played on stage, and appeared on the same DVD as Optimus Prime. Those are a few of the many weird and wonderful events of the last ten years that spring to mind, but we all have too many to count. I can't wait to see what craziness lies ahead. Bring it on.

Whew! I'm back from the international tv/film trade show IBC that was held in Amsterdam. Two bits of important info that I have to quickly get out there due to my absence!

A Stakeout. A Tale Of Revenge. A Saga of Violence.
And a need for Crisps. Lots of Crisps.

"KARMA" is based on a true story, the story of McDuff, who (drunkenly) sticking up for his brother on a night out, after a pot collector was causing them trouble, was tricked into going outside, and subsequently beaten up by the pot collector and his doormen friends.

Our tale picks up a fortnight later, where McDuff and his best friend Mike are staking out Pot Collector to enact their revenge. When he finally appears, all is not as it seems...

I consider "Karma" very much my 'first' film in a lot of ways. It was certainly my first 'technical' film.

Sure, I'd done music videos, and even a feature film, but though it was a feature, "Mancattan" was shot almost entirely in a documentary style, and certainly without crucial bits of film-making kit which we did not have access too on a budget of about £5.00 (Tripods, lights, grips, even tape was hard to come by!)

So in a very true sense of the word, I consider Karma to be my "first" film; which is why I haven't released it until now.

My first time using HD (specifically the Sony HVR-Z1E in HDV mode). My first time lighting my own set, lights were a previous luxury I could never afford! My first time using a wally-dolly/track of any kind. My first time casting an entire film using only professional actors. My first time grading a film. And my first time writing and directing something on my own, entirely from start to finish.

Made back in 2009, Karma stayed in the archives until recently because as it was my first 100% self-written film, I was new to script writing, and subsequently the script about two guys waiting in a car for 20 minutes... became a film with two guys in a car that was 20 minutes long. Not a great length for a short film.

Although the entire cast & crew were aware of this as my 'first' film, I still felt bad that at the end of the process I hadn't had confidence in releasing it online. I must stress this is nothing to do with the cast or crew, but purely in my own writing and editing. I didn't realise, at the start, that I had simply conceived of a film that was far too long.

However, two years later, I feel I have enough other work now (check out my website please folks!) to confidently unveil Karma, albeit with a slight re-edit. The film is much better graded, and now runs at a modest 15-ish minutes, without losing the essential "boredom" of what is a very British stake-out.

My thanks go out to Jonny, Joe, Trevor, Hazel, Errol, Leo, Sarah and Anthony for never once demanding to see this "black sheep" in my film family, though they had every right to. I hope now Karma can be welcomed into the fold publicly, and that this slight re-edit better shows off the hard work we all put in, and what was a valiant "first" attempt at proper film-making.

Hopefully the years have been kind, and you enjoy our humble movie film, backdated here on my blog, but at least now present for your viewing pleasure.

This music video was shot in The Word's usual practice rooms at MCC Studios in Mottram. The video was shot in HDV using Sony HVR-Z1E cameras, a couple of lights, and some snazzy camera angles. "My Silver Line" is an excellent tune which was an absolute joy to cut a video to. The strong drums especially make sure that the pace never lets up, and meant I could cut plenty of shots into the video; which was great as we were spoiled for choice! The band themselves were absolute legends on the night, well up for numerous takes and larking about, making the whole process fun as well as productive. I hope you enjoy the vid! They really are an awesome band and it was quite magical to hear their version of Waterfall for the first time in this live setting. Of course, some goon started clapping halfway through, but we still managed to enjoy it nonetheless, I hope you do too.

MANCATTAN charts the ups and downs of modern day mid-twenties Mancunians, and in particular one obsessive neurotic Woody Allen in love with someone else's girl.

Made entirely by Stuck In A Box Studios; a small team of Manchester based creatives, this film has been shot in Manchester UK and NEw York USA entirely on the team's own time, using their own skills, finances, talent and enthusiasm. This video was shot on a Sony HVR-Z1E using the Cinefilm setting to achieve a filmic look. Using just a couple of lights, we managed to transform The Green Rooms in Stockport (incidentally, where The Doves filmed one of their music videos... Great minds and all that) into a gorgeously lit location for The Chase to do their thing in. The split screen idea came about by accident when at the last minute, I decided to change the song that was meant to be in the video, and swapped it for "The Train." As a result, only two takes of the vocals were available from the rushes, and so some creative thinking was employed to solve the problem. The solution actually made the video what it is and I hope you enjoy it
