Trust In News 2022: BBC Presenter
Trust In News Conference, 2022
Rise of The Splinternets
TODAY I took part in the BBC Academy, BBC News, and Trusted News Initiative (a partnership between the world’s biggest tech platforms and news organisations) in a special session as part of the larger Trust In News virtual conference. This conference is a global event in which key players from the news industries share their strategies to tackle disinformation and misinformation.
I was invited to deliver my special session from the Blue Room called “Rise of The Splinternets”, the blurb for which went as follows:
The promise of a utopian global internet is over - we are now in the age of global “splinternets”. Countries across the globe are asserting control over information and our digital identities, by creating their "nationalised-internets". We will examine countries across the world; China, India, Russia, the US, the Uk and more... revealing how (and why) these digital-borders are being made.
The overall day itself was hosted by BBC Broadcaster Philippa Thomas, who introduced my session and role in providing explainers and demonstrations of how countries across the globe are asserting control over information and our digital identities, by creating their own 'nationalised-internets'. After the session, I was joined for the Q&As by BBC News’ Jane Wakefield.
The recording itself is available online for catch-up viewing at the link below. I had tremendous fun (as you can probably tell) and felt very privileged to be given a platform (for quite a long time - befitting the topic) with the world's leading experts in news. The 'Splinternet' is something I am fascinated with, and I hope that as you watch this session that you too will look at 'the' internet in entirely new ways.
